The Kindness Economy: Why Good Business Means Taking Care of People, Not Just Profits

Here’s a number worth sitting with: economists estimate that roughly 80% of Malaysians live paycheck to paycheck, with little or nothing left over once daily expenses are covered.

Many of them are someone’s employee, quietly stretching a single salary across rent, school fees, and groceries, hoping nothing goes wrong.

This is where the ‘kindness economy’ comes in: the idea that a business’s real success isn’t measured by profit alone, but by how much better it makes the lives of the people behind it.

At Heartworks Solution, we’ve seen this up close. Beyond giving disadvantaged individuals income opportunities as virtual assistants, we’ve delivered groceries to VAs during tough months, brought essentials to hospital waiting rooms, and shown up for team members navigating personal crises.

None of it was in a job description. All of it mattered.

A business’s real success isn’t measured by profit alone, but by how much better it makes the lives of the people behind it.

Now imagine one of your own employees, quietly worrying about grocery money instead of focusing on the client brief in front of them. What if, instead of waiting for that stress to spill into missed deadlines or burnout, you met the need before it became a crisis? A full fridge and one less thing to worry about is often all it takes for someone to show up fully, present, focused, and ready to give their best back to you.

So what can other business owners do? Here are four ways to bring the kindness economy into your own workplace:

1.Cover the basics

Groceries, utility bills, or transport costs during a rough patch go further than any bonus — because they remove the panic of how will I manage this week.

2. Invest in mental health

Therapy, counselling, or simply flexible time off acknowledges that employees are people first, not just output.

3. Support their environment and family

A safer commute, help with childcare, or checking in on aging parents shows employees they’re seen beyond their job title.

4. Fund their growth and passions

Public speaking classes, upskilling courses, or hobby workshops tell employees their potential matters to you too.

The payoff isn’t just goodwill. Research consistently links employee wellbeing to stronger business outcomes: companies investing in it report higher productivity, lower turnover, and stronger engagement, according to recent workplace wellness studies.

But the real ripple effect goes further: an employee who receives kindness during a hard season is far more likely to pay it forward, either to colleagues, to family, or their own community.

That’s the kindness economy in motion. Not charity. Not a marketing angle; just good business, built on the belief that when people thrive, everything else follows.

At Heartworks Solution, we’re proof that small businesses can lead with heart and still grow. If you’re an SME owner rethinking what “taking care of your team” really means, we’d love to swap notes.
