When Life Doesn't Go According to Plan: Jennie's Story
22 May 2026 • 4 min read • Fiona Tan
Some people come to Heartworks with a CV and a career goal. Single mum Jennie came with something far heavier: a hospitalised child, an emptying savings account, and a life that had just been turned completely upside down.
In mid-2024, my son Jaidon was hospitalised after a classroom accident left him unable to walk. He was 10 years old. The recovery road was long, about a year and eight months of physiotherapy, wheelchair appointments, and eventually sports rehabilitation before he was finally back on his feet by the end of 2025.
Before this happened, I was a Manager at the same company for seven years. Life was stable. We had a comfortable home in Ara Damansara and I had a steady income. But when Jaidon couldn’t walk, I made the decision to stop working entirely and care for him full-time. Slowly, my savings ran out.
I was forced to look for a job where I could work from home. I desperately posted about our situation in an online community group. That’s where Fiona, the Founder of Heartworks Solutions, approached me. She offered me a task I had never done before and guided me through every step. Today, I handle HRDC matters for training providers and I do it with confidence. The work is flexible, which means I can still be there for Jaidon’s rehabilitation without having to choose between my son and my income. On and off, Heartworks provides other jobs to help me increase my income.
That flexibility has meant everything to me.
Then in March 2026, just as things were beginning to stabilise, I was hospitalised for 11 days at Sungai Buloh Hospital with an E-coli infection. I had three operations on my thumb. The doctors also diagnosed me with diabetes and high blood pressure. I came home with medication and a new reality to manage.
While I was in hospital, Jaidon was home alone.
The Heartworks team stepped in without being asked. They organised food to be sent to him and reached out to friends to check in and send groceries.
I am so grateful.
